Charlotte Utilities Setup: Duke Energy, Water, Gas, Trash & Internet Checklist

Charlotte utilities setup works when you sequence electric, water, gas, trash, and internet against your key date—not the day the truck shows up.

Charlotte Newcomers Club has welcomed relocating women as a social network since 1957; this page is practical bridge content for anyone turning on service in Mecklenburg County. It is not operated by the club.

Use this checklist for a house or apartment inside the City of Charlotte / Charlotte Water footprint. Confirm every deposit, fee, and start window on the provider’s own site or phone line before you budget—do not rely on secondhand dollar amounts.

Order of operations (before lease day)

  1. Confirm who pays what in your lease or closing packet (electric, gas, water/sewer, trash, internet).
  2. Start Duke Energy for the service address (online Start/Stop/Move).
  3. Call Charlotte Water via 311 / 704-336-7600 for “water move in.”
  4. Schedule Piedmont Natural Gas only after electricity and water are (or will be) active by appointment day.
  5. Look up trash/recycling on My Charlotte Lookup; download CLT+ if you get City Solid Waste.
  6. Address-check internet (Spectrum, AT&T Fiber, Google Fiber) and book install for move-in week.
  7. Bridge lodging if keys or turn-on lag by a day or two (see hotel block below).

Who to call (matrix)

Service Provider How to start Notes for newcomers
Electric Duke Energy (Carolinas footprint covers most Charlotte addresses) duke-energy.com Start/Stop/Move Apply early; deposits/contracts may apply—ask Duke, do not guess the amount.
Water / sewer Charlotte Water CharMeck 311 or 704-336-7600; ask for “water move in / move out.” Hours commonly Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–7 p.m. (confirm when you call). Goal turn-on often 24–48 hours. SSN preferred for ID; new-service charge appears on first bill. If meter shows flow when tech arrives, they will not turn water on (flood protection).
Natural gas Piedmont Natural Gas piedmontng.com Start/Stop/Move or 800-752-7504 Electricity and water must be active before the gas appointment or the tech cannot complete start.
Trash / recycling City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services (single-family / eligible addresses) 311, CLT+ app, or Solid Waste FAQs; schedule lookup via My Charlotte Lookup Multi-family / apartments often use property-managed haulers—ask the leasing office, not 311.
Internet Spectrum, AT&T Fiber, Google Fiber (coverage varies by address) Each provider’s address checker (see Internet section) Check the exact unit address; building fiber ≠ every floor is live.

Start-service timeline

When Action
14–21 days before keys Confirm lease utility clauses; list providers; start Duke online; call Charlotte Water if you already have a firm date; open Piedmont scheduling calendar.
7–10 days before Lock gas appointment (after electric/water plan is solid); address-check internet and book install window; download CLT+.
2–3 days before Reconfirm Duke start date; reconfirm water move-in; text/email yourself account confirmation numbers.
Move-in day Walk every faucet and breaker; photograph meters if useful for disputes; place carts only if City service applies and day matches Lookup.
First week Create online bill accounts; set autopay reminders; schedule bulky pickup via CLT+/311 only if City-eligible.

Busy Mondays and post-holiday days stack utility calendars. Prefer mid-week start dates when you can.

Duke Energy (electric)

Most Charlotte residential addresses are served by Duke Energy Carolinas. Use the official Start, Stop or Move flow for a new address. Have the service address, identity details, and preferred start date ready.

Duke may require a deposit or service agreement based on credit and history—ask Duke for the current requirement; do not budget a number from a forum post. For new construction, builders coordinate inspections and premise numbers on a longer timeline; renters in existing stock usually need only the residential start request.

After start, enroll in MyAccount for outage alerts and billing. If the prior occupant left service on, still put the account in your name on your legal start date so you are not sharing liability.

Charlotte Water (water & sewer)

Call 311 (or 704-336-7600 from outside the area) and request a water move-in. Per Charlotte Water’s published guidance, have SSN ready (preferred) or a business EIN when applicable; ITINs are not accepted for this identity step. In-person option: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 East Fourth Street, during published weekday hours.

Charlotte Water’s goal is turn-on within 24–48 hours. A new-service charge is added to the first bill—confirm the current fee when you call. First bills can arrive later in the cycle (sometimes weeks out), so do not assume “no bill yet” means “no account.”

Drought or restriction stages change outdoor-use rules; check Charlotte Water’s current notices when you open the account.

Piedmont Natural Gas

Start online via Piedmont’s Start Service tools or call 800-752-7504. Book the earliest calendar slot that still sits after electric and water are active. If either is dark when the tech arrives, gas start delays.

Deposit rules depend on credit verification—Piedmont/Duke Energy processes may run a credit check. Ask the representative what applies to you; do not invent a deposit figure. Suspected gas leak: leave the area and call 800-752-7504 or 911.

Not every street has gas mains. If the home is all-electric, skip this step and note it in your first-month cost stack.

Solid Waste (trash & recycling)

City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services collects garbage weekly and recycling every other week (green/orange week) for eligible City addresses. Find your day and recycling week with My Charlotte Lookup, then follow curb rules (carts out by 6 a.m., not earlier than the day before; remove by midnight).

Use CLT+ or 311 for bulky-item scheduling—do not leave bulk at the curb without a scheduled pickup. Collection guidelines and FAQs live on charlottenc.gov.

Apartments and many townhome associations use private haulers. Ask property management for dumpster rules, recycling rooms, and whether trash is bundled in rent. Calling 311 will not override a private dumpster contract.

Internet providers (address-check first)

Spectrum, AT&T Fiber, and Google Fiber all serve parts of Charlotte; none covers every unit. Run the exact street address (and unit number) through each checker before you cancel a mobile hotspot plan.

Provider How to check Newcomer tip
Spectrum Spectrum availability / order flow for your ZIP and street Often the widest cable footprint—still verify the unit.
AT&T Fiber att.com/internet/availability Fiber tiers vary by buildout; “Charlotte has fiber” ≠ your building.
Google Fiber fiber.google.com/cities/charlotte → Check availability Growing map; waitlist vs. ready-to-install differs by block.

Book install for the afternoon you have keys when possible. Bring photo ID matching the account name. Ask about self-install kits vs. tech visits—apartment wiring closets sometimes force a tech appointment.

Apartment vs house: who is responsible?

Item Typical house / townhome (owner or renter) Typical multifamily apartment
Electric Resident starts Duke in own name Resident starts Duke unless master-metered (rare—read lease)
Water/sewer Resident starts Charlotte Water (if City-served) Often landlord/property; sometimes RUBS or submeter—lease controls
Gas Resident starts Piedmont if gas heat/water Same if unit has gas; many mid-rises are electric
Trash City carts + Lookup day (if City-eligible) Property dumpster / private hauler
Internet Resident chooses provider Resident chooses, unless building exclusivity or bulk Wi-Fi—ask leasing

Always follow the signed lease over this table. If HOA rules add recycle fees or valet trash, those hit your first month too.

First-month cost stack (no invented dollars)

Possible one-time items (not a fixed total):

  • Duke deposit or credit-based setup (check provider)
  • Charlotte Water new-service charge on first bill (check 311)
  • Piedmont deposit if required (check provider)
  • Internet install / activation / equipment (check provider)
  • Prorated rent, parking, and HOA move-in fees (lease / HOA)
  • Hotel nights if keys or turn-on slip (see Booking block)

Build a spreadsheet with “confirmed” vs “[VERIFY] with provider” columns. Recheck fees the week you schedule—tariffs change.

Gap hotels while you wait on keys or utility turn-on

If electricity or water lags a day, sleep somewhere with working HVAC and Wi-Fi instead of sweating in a dark unit. Extended-stay style rooms help when the gap stretches.

Or search Charlotte hotels on Booking.com with free-cancellation dates that match your lease start.

Home-setup kit (after power is live)

Once Duke is on, protect gear and tame the cable pile before the internet tech arrives.

  • Photo ID + lease or closing docs for any tech visit
  • Duke / water / gas confirmation numbers in your phone
  • Flashlight and phone charger (battery pack) until lights prove out
  • Know shutoff locations: main water, gas valve (if applicable), breaker panel
  • Test hot water after gas or electric water heater is confirmed
  • Place City trash carts only on your Lookup day
  • Label Wi-Fi password for household members after install

FAQ

Can I start everything the morning I get keys?
Risky. Water often needs 24–48 hours; gas needs a booked slot after electric/water. Start the week before.

What if I live in an apartment?
Still start electric (usually). Ask leasing who handles water and trash. Address-check internet for your unit number.

Do I need Piedmont if the listing says “all electric”?
No. Confirm the HVAC and water heater fuel type in person—listings are sometimes wrong.

Where do I find my trash day?
My Charlotte Lookup for City-served addresses; property management for multifamily.

Who do I call outside 311 hours?
Duke and Piedmont publish 24/7 lines for outages and gas emergencies. Non-emergencies: 311 weekday hours, CLT+, or online requests.
